Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov believes that following the negotiations in Riyadh, the American side has "come to better understand" the Russian position.
He stated this while summarizing the discussions between the delegations of the USA and the Russian Federation, as reported by Russian media.
According to him, the Russian delegation agreed with Secretary of State Marco Rubio that it is important for countries to "be guided by their national interests." It is essential to "regulate these relations" if the interests of the states do not align, and to "avoid" provoking military escalation.
"I believe the conversation was very useful," Lavrov said. "We did not just listen; we heard each other."
"The American side has come to a better understanding of our position," he asserts.
The first task, the Russian Foreign Minister stated, is to ensure the prompt approval of ambassadors from both countries. He also urged to "remove the obstacles" that the Biden administration, according to him, has established in diplomatic activities, "seriously complicating" the work of the embassies of Russia and the USA.
The second task is the "Ukrainian direction." The American side will inform who will represent Washington in this management, Lavrov said. According to him, "as soon as we learn the name," we will "designate our participant in the process."
The third agreement is to create conditions "as the crisis in Ukraine is resolved" for the restoration of cooperation between Russia and the USA "in full," particularly regarding "geopolitical issues" in various parts of the world.
Lavrov stated that the delegations of Russia and the USA have reached mutual understanding on various issues, but this does not necessarily mean that their positions have converged.
Both sides have "practically agreed" that the issues concerning the operation of diplomatic missions need to be resolved "once and for all," Lavrov said.
Previously, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington and Moscow agreed to restore the former number of employees in their embassies.
Lavrov added that the USA and Russia have outlined a mutual desire to find solutions to international and economic matters.
Commenting on possible negotiations regarding Ukraine, Lavrov mentioned that first the USA and then Russia should appoint representatives, after which the parties will begin regular consultations.
Background. Recall that following the negotiations in Riyadh, Marco Rubio explained how the process will develop further, naming three components of the next stage.
In response to a question about lifting sanctions on Russia, Rubio stated that there is still a long way to go before discussing this, and today it was only agreed to start the negotiation process.
