The negotiations between the American and Russian delegations regarding the cessation of the Russian-Ukrainian war concluded in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Vitkoff, representing the American side, provided comments to the press following the talks.
"We are confident that we can initiate a serious process to determine how and through what mechanisms we can end this war, depending on whether all parties wish for it," Rubio stated.
"President Trump clearly stated during his campaign that he is the only leader in the world who has been able to launch this process that we see today. It will involve both Ukraine and our partners in Europe," he noted.
When asked about the next step, Rubio replied that it would be multifaceted.
"The first part is to work in specialized teams to ensure that the diplomatic mission functions effectively, as certain actions over the past 10 years have diminished our ability to work with Moscow. Therefore, we need serious diplomatic steps to restore diplomatic communication.
The second component is a high-level team that includes experts on these topics; they must collaborate with experts from the other side to discuss the parameters of what the end of this war will look like. This will involve consultations and discussions with Ukraine and other partners, but ultimately, the Russian side will be indispensable in this process.
The third component involves identifying opportunities alongside these two parties regarding whether we can bring this conflict to an acceptable conclusion. Our capabilities include shared geopolitical interests and economic factors that will be better for the world and improve our relationships with both of these important countries.
This will be integrated with all components. I hope the diplomatic aspect will progress quite swiftly," Rubio stated.
He declined to mention any specific dates, emphasizing that Trump wants to resolve this conflict as quickly as possible.
Also, in response to a question about lifting sanctions on Russia, Rubio stated that discussions on such matters are still far off and that today’s agreement was merely to begin the negotiation process.
