Historic milestone: Ukraine has made its first-ever export of biomethane to Europe via pipeline.
On February 6, 2025, the Energy Customs successfully processed a periodic customs declaration for the movement across the customs border of Ukraine of the first batch of biomethane for export to Europe via pipeline transportation.

It is noted that over the past two years, work has been carried out with the participation of Ukrainian MPs, representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the State Customs Service, the Energy Customs, the gas transportation system operator, the gas storage operator, experts, civil society, and biomethane producers to amend Ukrainian legislation related to customs control and customs clearance of biomethane.
“This is not just an important step in the development of green energy and strengthening the energy security of the region. It is a significant breakthrough for Ukraine on the path to energy independence and European integration,” the agency emphasized.
Furthermore, the press service highlighted the main advantages of this decision, including:
- Biomethane is an eco-friendly fuel that can replace natural gas and reduce CO₂ emissions.
- Pipeline export of biomethane opens new prospects for stable supply of eco-friendly gas to Europe.
- Ukrainian producers demonstrate that our country is ready to be a key player in the European renewable energy market.
- This export opens up new opportunities for the agricultural sector and investors in the bioenergy field. It is noted that this supports the agricultural sector, as biomethane is produced from organic waste, which stimulates the development of agriculture.
