The South Korean prosecutor's office has announced suspicions of treason and abuse of power against President Yoon Suk Yeol.
This was reported by the South Korean agency Yonhap.
"There have been numerous complaints, and an investigation is being conducted according to the process," stated Pak Se Hyun, head of the special investigation team for the state of emergency.
Earlier that same day, the prosecutor's office arrested former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hen on charges of treason as part of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the president's declaration of a state of emergency, writes Yonhap.
The special investigation team, which is examining political upheavals, announced that they arrested Kim and seized his mobile phone. Kim was sent to a detention center in eastern Seoul. It was noted that he appeared for questioning at 1:30 AM, stating that he would actively cooperate with the investigation. Six hours later, he was arrested.
On December 4, the minister resigned. "I informed the president of my desire to resign, taking responsibility for all the upheavals caused by the state of emergency," read the statement from the now-former minister.
Recall that on December 3, Yoon Suk Yeol declared a state of emergency in the country, accusing the opposition of attempting to destabilize the situation.
Following this, the work of the parliament and political parties was suspended, and control over all media was tightened. Later, the president canceled the state of emergency, which lasted six hours.
Background. Earlier, Mind reported that the National Assembly of South Korea was unable to impeach the president, as 195 deputies voted for impeachment, with 200 needed.
