Poland has commenced the construction of fortification lines along its border with Russia. The project is expected to be completed by 2028.

This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine, citing Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on X (Twitter).

The initiative is referred to as the "Eastern Shield" project.

"The construction of the 'Eastern Shield' has begun. Initial works are taking place at the border with Russia," Tusk wrote.

A few days ago, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also announced the start of construction.

As part of the project, Poland plans to build fortifications and fences along 400 kilometers of the border with Belarus and Russia, dig 800 kilometers of trenches, equip minefields, set up anti-tank hedgehogs, and more. The construction is set to be completed by 2028.

As Tusk previously explained, the "Eastern Shield" is intended to deter potential aggressors. He described the project as an investment in security. The Polish government has allocated 10 billion zlotys for this purpose.

Conflict between Poland and Belarus

The conflict between Poland and Belarus has been ongoing for several years. The trigger was the migration crisis at the border when Belarus directed illegal migrants towards the Polish border.

The conflict escalated at the onset of the full-scale war in Ukraine. Earlier, Poland announced strengthening its border with Belarus. Warsaw has also intensified border checks and conducted military exercises.

Previously, Poland and the Baltic states proposed to the EU to construct a 700-kilometer defense line along the border with Russia and Belarus.
